Good things come to those who wait – due to various postponements caused by COVID-19, the long-awaited finale of the Deep Drone Challenge, a kind of hackathon in the field of drone technology, can finally take place almost exactly one year after the call.
The startup incubator for three-dimensional mobility brigkAIR and Europe’s largest aerospace company Airbus launched the call about a year ago and were looking for interested and talented participants for the “Deep Drone Challenge” competition. 122 applications from 17 countries followed, from which 18 teams were selected to demonstrate their passion for drones in subsequent online events and the recent warm-up. Due to the ongoing pandemic, both the warm-up and the final of the competition had to be postponed several times.
On Saturday, August 7th, 2021 the time has finally come! The participants can win up to € 50,000 in prize money on the day of the final. All teams had the opportunity to concentrate on one of two main topics and to develop appropriate solutions:
- The Drone Bot: With the help of speech recognition, the drone should complete a defined route with existing obstacles.
- The Pathfinder: The drone should reach a defined target point as quickly as possible and completely autonomously and overcome any sudden disturbances.
The assessment basis is formed by parameters such as precision, flight time and novelty. The assessment is carried out by an expert jury made up of representatives from business and politics. These include Dr. Reinhard Brandl, Member of the Bundestag, Dr. Andreas Thellmann, Airbus, one representative each: in the Bundeswehr and the startup Fairfleet as well as our managing director Franz Glatz
The finale of the Deep Drone Challenge will take place outside the public domain in Manching. This is the only way to ensure compliance with the current infection protection measures. After the event, there will be detailed reporting on the social media channels Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn as well as on the brigkAIR website. Stay tuned!
Dr. Franz Glatz, Managing Director of the digital start-up center brigk:
We hope that the Deep Drone Challenge participants will spur each other on to top performance and that the competition will help establish Ingolstadt as an interesting region for unmanned flying. It is possible that one or the other prototype can later turn into a business idea and start-ups that can be further developed here in the region. We are very excited to see what the participants have achieved after almost a year and are very much looking forward to a great event.
